Music Review: In Defense of “Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man”

Since childhood, I have been told that this song is about drugs. I fear that since its creation, people have been understanding it as if it were “Hotel California”. It is most certainly not about drugs. It is about life & art.

Just out of curiosity, how is this song construed to be speaking of drugs? My innocent virgen mind can't fathom how such an interpretation could be garnered from the lyrics. . .Is tambourine a codeword for some baser, dastardly object?
